Americana Crafts

I want to buy wholesale crafts to sell on a small scale (local craft shows), do I have to create a company?

I am preparing some crafts to sell in some local craft shows - just for a little extra money. While looking around on the internet for some ideas I discovered a lot of craft sites offer wholesale products. I'm interested, but do I have start my own business to do this? and if so what would be the downfall to this - (i.e Income Tax?) - also I have a part time job , and as far as I know, starting my own business in Canada will make me no longer eligible for E.I. Is this true? Any advice will be appreciated.

  1. Yes you have to register a company in order to do a business in Canada but To start a business you do not need to register a company first. You can start selling if you earn good money then you can consult an accountant to find a way and if you live in Canada then you can register it in your province and that would not cost you much. And if you would be looking a website to advertise then you can advertise at any website like MutualBargains.ca
  2. Laws and trade conditions vary between countries. Generally I'd suggest you don't have to create a registered company, which can be expensive unless you can buy one with a suitable constitution "off the shelf" from an accountancy company or similar. However, although registered limited liability companies actually protect the owner/operator from financial loss in some circumstances (their losses are limited to their capital) banks and others often prefer them to trade with - often with "personal guarantees", which undo the protection. You can trade under a registered business name without it being a registered company. It's a weird world.
